TL;DR
On 30 April 2026 the Australian Signals Directorate updated its guidance on frontier AI models, naming Anthropic's Claude Mythos Preview and OpenAI's GPT-5.5 as inflection points. The update doesn't say attackers have new techniques. It says they have the same techniques at a fraction of the cost — a UK NCSC simulation puts a full attack attempt at around £65. APRA, the same week, told Australian banks they were behind on AI security. If your security program was scoped before 2024, it was scoped for a different threat model. Here's what changed, and what to do this quarter.
What ASD actually said
Three things, stated plainly.
Frontier models reduce the cost, effort, and expertise required to discover and exploit software vulnerabilities. They do not, yet, invent new attack categories.
Speed and scale are the new variables. Vulnerability discovery cycles that used to take months now take hours. Defenders' patch windows shrink in proportion.
Fundamentals still matter — but they are no longer sufficient. ASD is asking organisations to keep doing defence-in-depth, patching, and IT/OT hygiene and integrate AI into defensive practice.
The update was prompted by Anthropic's 7 April announcement of Claude Mythos Preview, which Anthropic itself flagged for advanced software engineering and cyber capabilities. The same week, GPT-5.5 landed. ASD's view, after a few weeks of evaluation, is that the picture is now clear enough to advise.
Why this is a board problem, not an IT problem
Because the constraint has shifted from expertise to funding. The UK's NCSC ran end-to-end attack simulations on pre-March-2026 models and found that the limiting factor was processing time and budget — not attacker skill. That changes the threat model in ways that matter at board level:
- The economics of attack have collapsed. A motivated actor with a corporate card can run thousands of vulnerability-discovery passes against your stack overnight.
- Mid-market is now in scope. When attacks cost £65, attackers don't need a £100M target to clear ROI.
- Your supply chain just got wider. Every model, every MCP server, every copilot your vendors use is now part of your attack surface.
- Frameworks lag. ISO 27001:2022 was finalised before agentic AI was a production concern. ISO 42001 exists, but most Australian businesses have never heard of it.
APRA's 30 April letter to banks called this out directly. Reuters reported it as APRA warning that banks "lag in AI security" and urging stronger cyber practices. If you're an APRA-regulated entity, that letter is the compliance signal. If you're not, treat it as the leading indicator for the rest of the AU regulatory stack.
What to actually do this quarter
Four moves, in order. None of them require a new tool.
1. Inventory every AI tool your business is touching
Not just the ones you bought. Every copilot, every MCP server, every agent, every browser extension your staff have installed. The shadow-AI surface is almost always 3–5x bigger than the sanctioned surface. Until you have the list, you cannot threat-model.
2. Threat-model your top three agentic workflows
Pick the three workflows where an AI agent has tool access to a system that matters — usually finance, customer data, or code. Run prompt injection, tool poisoning, and memory poisoning scenarios against them. The OWASP LLM Top 10 and MITRE ATLAS give you the catalogue. You don't need a vendor; you need a senior practitioner and two weeks.
3. Decide your ISO 42001 position
Not "do we need certification." The decision is whether you treat ISO 42001 as a 2026 strategic objective or a 2027 problem. The right answer depends on your customers' procurement asks and your EU AI Act exposure — but the wrong answer is to defer the decision.
4. Update the board pack
Add a one-page AI risk view to the next quarterly pack. Inventory size, top three risks, ISO 42001 stance, AI governance owner. If your CISO or risk lead can't fill that page, that's the gap.
The honest take
Frontier AI didn't create a new genre of cyber risk. It compressed the timeline. Programs that were already mature will adapt. Programs built on annual audit cycles and 200-page binders will not. The firms that move first won't be the biggest — they'll be the ones whose security leaders treat ASD's April update as the wake-up call it is.
